Got another used lens today
« on: November 05, 2015, 12:47:22 PM »
Well, I picked up a 1st gen 70-200L f2.8 IS today.
I think (hope?) it will be a little more versatile than my 100-400.
The lens is in perfect condition too.
My reasoning for picking this up are as follows:

1) I can't go full zoom on the 100-400 anyhow due to images going soft so I pull back to 350 or so.
2) At 350mm, I am at f5.6.  I'm not liking that at all.
3) I can add an extender onto this 70-200 and at worse only be f4 at full zoom.
4) I can use this lens at the low end to try my hand at portraiture.

Now to sell my 100-400.  (yes, you'll see it for sale in another thread here shortly)
Take your camera with you dammit. You can't take your next "best photo" if your camera is sitting at home in the bag, now can you?

Congrats Doodle!!

For my telephotos, I have the 70-200 as well as a 150-500, for each of which I also have a 2x extender.

I don't use the 150-500 all that much these days so I'm thinking I may pick up a 300 prime.  I think that should fill my quality and distance needs, leaving me with only an 85mm to complete my gear needs.  Oh to be rich..

Have you ever made any comparison shots with and without the extender to see if there is any significant softening that might occur?
I'm considering an extender but I'm afraid of the possible softening of the images. I will definitely need to do some deep checking on this possibility.

And yea..rich? I'm so poor I can't afford to pay attention!

There is a tiny softening, but in fairness, my best selling photo was shot with the 70-200 with x2 attached, so it's not all bad.  The lens sans-doubler is very, very good, so the loss of fstop isn't heartbreaking.  At 1:1 with x2, it needs a little extra attention with sharpening, but quite honestly, I think its fair to say that all lenses past a certain focal length need it in all but the best of conditions.

At least, that's what I tell myself anyway :)
