I'm new with photography and just got a 550d.

I'm not sure if this is normal or a problem - When I'm on the Viewfinder, AF mode, and using the built in Flash. When i AF for a shot, the built in flash pulses or it flashes few times before the final shot.
Is that normal or is my built in Flash stuffed?

That is normal... The camera needs additional light to focus.  Some cameras have an infra-red focus beam, this one uses the flash.

Thank you for posting this.  Useful especially for me coz I'm using the Japanese version of EOS550D i.e. EOS Kiss X4. The reference manual are in Japanese. So... this is helpful. TQVM

Hello, Yes it is Normal and quite useful. It determines the flash needed to get the correct exposure. It's like a pre Flash...is that what you are referring to? It will only do it in certain modes. In your flash settings you can also control the amount of Flash and use a Second Curtain, that takes a Flash after the Exposure. I believe that is how it works. And in Manual mode you can control the Exposure Compensation Plus or Minus.....
Hope this Helps,,

Just a general observation .. no, flash not stuffed! Many cameras now use pre-flash - or rapid bursts of flash before picture is made, to determine stuff like focus and exposure, or even for "red-eye reduction".  Try a browse thru your manual :)  Red-eye reduction on?   Hmm need to read MY manual! Lol  ::)
Note, this feature is ok if you have time for it, but may get in the way when working fast!  (May need to switch off?)
All the best.
