does sigma 24-70 NON HSM work on this camera??
« on: May 31, 2013, 10:12:10 PM »
Hi there all, new here.

Bought a Sigma 24-70 on Ebay the other day.  Put it on my camera and it gave me the error code 01.  So I returned it, since I tried to clean the contacts to no avail.  Now, I'm wondering does this lens even work on a t2i?  This is the NON HSM version.....this lens is about $400, not $900.  I'm really wanting this lens to work for me and I don't want the HSM version for MUCH more money.

thanks.
-Jeff

Err 01 means a communication error, and I think there's a high probability that this lens does not work with the T2i; the reason is given in an article on "the digital picture". Go here, and scroll down to the bottom where it says in bold "potential issues with third party lenses".

Thank you for bringing this to our attention, I was unaware of it!

thanks for replying.

Ok, what lens would you recommend for low light band live band photgraphy?  I've heard from many that THIS is the lens, but they must mean the hsm version.

What's your opinion on the matter?  I'm still wanting to spend no more than $500 on it.

I'd suggest either of these, both can be had for under $500. The Tamron is lighter on the wallet and has image stabilisation, or vibration compensation (VC).

Tokina 16-50mm f/2.8 AT-X 165 PRO DX
Tamron SP AF 17-50mm f/2.8 VC XR Di II LD Asp.

These would give the same field of view as a 24-70 on your t2i but if you want/need the actual 24-70 focal length range then a Tamron SP AF 28-75mm f/2.8 XR Di LD Asp. might be worth a look.
