Alternative site for uploading?
« on: December 04, 2014, 06:14:52 PM »
I'm kind of curious if anyone uses another site (I use flickr) to upload their images on, for use on our forums.
The reason I ask: sometimes I want to post a photo that was a not-good/horrible/screwed up image to be used as either an example, or a "how do I fix this" type of thing.
I don't want to put "bad" images on my flickr account as I use that to show off my stuff to anyone that asks to see examples of my work. (call me cheap for not having my own website but flickr works well for this!)
I want to add the occasional "bad photo" to our site but need an alternative way of posting. Any recommendations?
Do you guys ever post directly here with a smaller sized image instead of posting a large one?
Thoughts?

I hope I explained what I'm looking for clearly enough.  If you have any questions about this, please let me know and I'll try to answer it better.
Take your camera with you dammit. You can't take your next "best photo" if your camera is sitting at home in the bag, now can you?

I have the same want.  I think you can make the junky stuff not public and share it only with people you invite.  I'm assuming it works (i.e. doesn't appear in my stream) when somebody else views my flickr account but it is still visible when I log in a look at my own account.

I need to check into this.  It would work because I am so used to posting in here using the BBC code method. It WOULD be handy for sure.
Thanks Ocho, I'll give it a look.
I wanted to post a shot SOOC of a deer at 800 ISO. NOT happy with the amount of noise with it. Kinda fuzzy too but then again...I took it from a car that was still running so it wasn't gonna be tack sharp anyhow.

EDIT: come to think about it...if they are not "friends" on flickr, it may not show up for them, right? I mean, if I post a link here...will it let whoever views the post to see it?

This lady seemed to have the same requirement as you, did her solution work? And is it still valid with all the flickr changes?

Thanks Andy.  Yes, the thread reads like it worked for her.

We can do a little experiment.  I just made my first photo in my photostream private.  It's my daughter doing a goofy jump on a boardwalk.  My second photo (and first public photo) is her walking away from the camera.  When you view my stream what's the first photo you see?

Yep, she is walking away from the camera.
Time for me to give it a shot with my fuzzy deer...

This is the only way I could get it to work was with a link.
The link below is to the SOOC photo.

This link is to my photo stream...where it SHOULDN'T be visible...

Is the deer visible in my stream?

I followed (or so I thought) what they said to do in the link that Andy provided.
What did you do Ocho? Can I get you to dumb the process down for me on how you did it?

This might do it!  I had to create an "Album" (of one photo) to create a Guest Pass...

I think that should do it?

That worked (I think, depending on what you intended!).  I could see an album with just the one deer shot in it.  Along the top it said "You're surfing around flickr on a Guest Pass to see T2iShoooter's Test album-private set.  But I can see the deer shot in your stream too.  The trick now is to see if somebody else who you haven't invited to see the test album can see the deer in your stream.

Good point. I'll check it out on my wifes computer this morning.

ScottS. Thanks...if this doesn't work, I think I will use Photobucket for my oddball stuff like this.

sorry my answer was so short. photobucket is free, allows nested albums, and has settigns for who can see albums.
it's not always been the best but for now they've been pretty reliable.

No prob. I was initially looking for an alternative place for my photos, separate from the ones I usually show off on flickr. As long as I can easily load photos onto our site, that's all I really need. With my "show off" photos on one site, it allows me to put more obscure photos (test shots, whimsical images, etc) onto another site and have them both work here in our forums. That might actually be the easier route when you get down to it.
