Audio for video
« on: December 07, 2013, 10:09:33 AM »
First of all, not promoting the company that sells this product.  But the product, I think, is worth mentioning as this recorder attaches to the bottom of your DSLR. Looks pretty cool and I have always liked the company.

The form factor of the DR60 is nice, but it's mildly overpriced for the performance... For just a bit more than half the price you could go for the DR40 and have the same amount of phantom powered XLR ins, and preamps that are just as good. You'll have to mount it somewhere other than under the camera, though.

And Zoom recently released the H6 anyway, with up to 6 XLR ins and much better preamps. Nobody else offers anything like it in this price range.

That's where something like this comes in.

I have one of these, ordered some cold shoes for the top, and mounted a Manfrotto 577 quick release on the top of the bottom plate so anything with a 501PL plate slides right in.  The hand grips are just far enough apart to be some help in handheld work and it will accommodate cameras up to 5D MkII/III size.  Extra extension "risers" can be ordered for even larger gear.

This thing is very sturdy for it's low price.

I've worked with the DR-40, DR-60, and Zoom H5 (which I recently bought) and H6, and I'll say this.

If you need phantom power, buy the zoom, or buy nothing. The preamps in your DSLR are better than either Tascam.

If you don't need phantom, they Tascams are fine.
