Best video lens for use with Matte-box and follow-focus
« on: March 01, 2011, 03:10:35 AM »
I'm looking for a lens for the 550D/Rebel T2i which will work well with a matte-box. This means that it should not extend the lens when using the manual focusing ring or zoom ring, it should all happen within the lens as other wise it will push against the matte-box and possible damage the lens (the matte box will be on a rail system and so fixed in place).

I'm also looking to get a follow-focus but the lens I currently have (the standard 18-55mm kit lens) extends when you manually focus causing the focus ring to move forwards, and a follow-focus relies on a gear staying in contact with the focus ring when using it.

I would also preferably like it to have a better zoom than the 18-55mm lens, but I would be happy with any suggestions. Thanks.

Canon's 17-40mm f/4L and 70-200mm f/2.8L zooms would be a good place to start if you're looking for a wide zoom range on lenses that don't extend during zoom.

And i've used the RedRock Micro follow focus with a gear on the kit 18-55mm lens, it works fine. The lens gears are wide enough to deal with the "traveling" the lens does while focusing. They did pay attention during design. :)

Also, unless you're using a really wide lens (like one with an 82mm filter ring size), most matteboxes will have an opening wide enough for the lens to pass through a bit if need be.

Have you picked out a mattebox & follow focus system yet?

Yes I have chosen my matte-box and follow-focus system, it's here: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/PROAIM-Shoulder-Mount-V2-Follow-Focus-Matte-Box-Cage-/110603579829?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item19c07cb1b5#ht_6322wt_905

Thanks for your help, I'm now interested in getting the EF 17-40mm F4 L Lens :)
I was wondering, do you (or anyone reading this thread) have this lens, if so do you have an example of video shot through this lens so I can see the quality please? Thank you  :D

I don't personally own this lens, but here's a link to a search of Vimeo.com for videos shot on the 17-40mm Canon.  http://www.vimeo.com/search/videos/search:canon%2017-40mm/168e8fed
