Help needed with video function.
« on: August 16, 2013, 08:34:55 AM »
Hi All,

I've just joined and hope I'm posting this right. I have a 550d that I got 3 years ago. I'm passable with the camera side of things but can't seem to get the video functioning properly. The video only records for 5 seconds and then automatically stops recording. I've tried changing numerous settings but still no luck. Please could someone help before I do my nut in. :P

Your memory card should be a Class 6 or higher.  Some cards are counterfeit, so you need to be a reputable card from a reputable place.  It should say the class on the card and it will be a number in a circle or a "C"

It's not your fault, or the camera, it's the memory card. It's not fast enough to cope with the HD video data that the camera is throwing at it.

Go to a reputable store (not Amazon which is rife with fakes) and buy a SANDISK card of CLASS 10. (You don't need to get a 'super fast' card, you won't benefit from it.) Your video function will work then.

Edit: by the way, Bandman is not wrong, technically Class 6 will do it; but I said Class 10 because there's not much price difference, and it's wise to be sure! Bandman you beat me to it - good thing we agree :-)

Others responding blaming the card are absolutely right.  But to help you with manual exposure with the 550D, here is a link to an article I wrote.  Mark and copy to a word processing file for reference.
