My best bud
« on: August 06, 2014, 07:12:19 PM »
Have you ever had to make the decision when to put down your old dog?  My oldest, which we have had for the past 10 years and is around 13 years old, is getting to the stage where we have to make this decision.  He is having trouble walking and can no longer hold his bladder long enough to wait until we get home to let him outside (he's pissing on the carpet all the time).  Don't know what to do.

  • Old age causes memory loss. Or worse, memory loss.

Been there, done that, and was devastated when we finally made that call.
Good luck. I think you'll know because you will be torn between wanting to have him around or helping him out of his pain...but you'll know. And he will too. Have faith sir.

You have my condolences too.
Take your camera with you dammit. You can't take your next "best photo" if your camera is sitting at home in the bag, now can you?

Oh, that's tough Suka.  Sorry you're going through it.  I had to put down my 20 year old cat "best bud" this year and struggled with it but after we had him put to sleep it was clear to me we had done the right thing for him and really felt good about it.  The only advice I can give you about when the right time is, is to try to separate what is best for your pet from what is best for you.  We tend to want to hold on to our pets even when they are in pain or discomfort.  Hang in there Suka, as the wise Doodle said you'll know.

I just went through that with my 17 year old cat (her brother is still with us). She went blind, and started walking in circles, and seemed to be invoking some instinctive need to crawl away to find a place to sleep forever. She had always purred like crazy when she was held, so the first day she didn't do that was the cutoff day for me.

We used the purr-o-meter too.  Too bad dogs don't purr or this would be a little easier for poor Suka.

Thanks everyone for your support, experience and advice.  This year has really sucked for me.  I will have to have a very serious discussion with the GF about my bud.
