Is there a way that you can actually host the entries on the forum, or somewhere else? So they're all in the same place, on a server that is also non-identifying?

That way people couldn't just grab the link from the photo and find the origin (and identity) of the submission...

Not that I'm thinking too far into this, or anything.  ;)

I see what you are saying and I did not think of that 1074. :(

I am afraid that would be a bit of a pain in the ass as everyone would have to then transfer a photo to me via email or dropbox etc.

I am going to have to think about how we could avoid that but for now the pm with the photo link is the best that we are going to do.

other forums making this competitions every week not once a month so it is better i think because a month is so long. like everyone know, there are only a few people joining competitions and we are waiting weeks for results. it is so boooring

The 2 biggest drawbacks I see to this are:
1) Not everyone has the free time to shoot and post weekly, especially if a little travel is required.
2) It quadruples the workload for the mods.

Otherwise I understand the length of time issue.
(Stay tuned for some quicker competitions with 1-vs-1 challenges that should be quicker though)
Take your camera with you dammit. You can't take your next "best photo" if your camera is sitting at home in the bag, now can you?

If we do any of them I will have to fly down and hire you to be my tour guild. I have considered a trip starting out in Arizona and going in a big circle through Utah for a long time. I just can't see doing that trip if you are not going to put aside about three weeks to do it.

Skippy, I would be honored to be your apprentice for three weeks of schooling on photography.  Wait a second, three weeks sounds like a lot of time.  What if we disagree on politics and/or religion, just don't get along together, and end up breaking each others cameras and accessories?  Then I'm stuck in the middle of the Utah desert by myself, expelled from this forum, without ever having a chance of winning a POTM contest.

Being serious, if you ever plan on a trip to the southwest, contact me.  If we can't meet in person, I can at least give you some good places to get great photos in the Phx area like the ideas I provided to bgray.

By the way, did this quote thing work?

Suka - I will keep that in mind for sure. I mean I am not lying to you when I tell you that I have plotted a trip out there a bunch of times but just never seem to make it happen. Help me figure something out. With the Grand Canyon, Monument Valley, Antelope Canyon, and Zion being a circle that I think that I would love to make, what is the time of year that you consider best, okay, not so good, stay away?

My thought is that April to mid May are prime. Mid May to Mid June is just okay as it is really starting to heat up. Mid June until mid September is probably a simple stay away. Then it probably gets back to okay in September and just keeps getting better until January when Winter risk kicks in with a lot of potential closed roads etc.

Am I thinking correct here?

Skippy, I think you did your homework pretty well on when to schedule your trip.  The lower desert (Sonoran Desert) is pretty much open year round except for June-mid October.  But, since most, if not all your trip will be in the high desert I would think April/May through June/July, and Sept through December should be okay.  I visited the Grand Canyon in the winter and it was beautiful looking with the snow.  One thing to keep in mind, if you want to visit the North Rim of the canyon it doesn't open until May-I never been to the North Rim so don't know what the views are like.  Also keep in mind, summer is the most popular time for visitors to the places you mentioned-especially the Grand Canyon-lots of people and kids in your way, yuck.

I have also been to the GC in March on a day that we drove in and it was about 50 in the morning but turned into a driving snow storm and we were lucky to be able to drive out of the park. The gate to come in was closed by the time we got out.

I took my kids to the GC in late July one year and I didn't think that weather was terrible. It was cooking in Vegas but once we got to the GC is was not so bad. I don't know which rim that is that we went to.
