Buying a new lens for concert photography
« on: November 13, 2014, 09:58:15 AM »
Hi, newbie here.  I have a T2i that I use mostly for concert photography.  I have a 50mm 1.8 and a 55-250 f/4.0-5.6.  Since I'm able to get pretty close to the stage, I've found that neither lens does everything I need anymore.  Any recommendations on a reasonably priced lens for shooting low light concerts from right up against the stage?  I've heard everything from the 24-70mm and 17-55mm zoom to 35mm prime lens. Would love to get thoughts here.  Thanks!

In the same situation my first choice would be my Canon 70-200mm f/2.8 IS L lens and although it is expensive it is a fantastic piece of glass in most situations. As it sounds as if this is not an option (unless you want to investigate the 2nd hand market or rent one occasionally) my suggestion would be the Canon 35mm f/2.0 IS. It is also a great lens and the IS will give you an additional 1 or 2 stops. You will have to rely on cropping your images in many situations but the IQ is good enough from edge to edge to allow quite extreme crops.

Yeah, that 70-200mm f/2.8 IS L is expensive...I'm not quite there yet.  Also, I'm like watching my concerts from right in front of the stage or barricade so I'm pretty close.  You would suggest the 35mm f/2.0 IS over, say, the Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8?  Is there a benefit to the flexibility of being able to go down to 17mm?

Sorry, I have the 35mm f/2 but have no experience of the Tamron or its image quality. You might be able to get some independent reviews online which compare and contrast the two though.

Thanks.  I was wondering whether to get another prime or zoom.   Will check out independent reviews on both.

Check the 70-200mm f/4 L IS. Half the price of the f/2.8, all of the quality.
