How to get the smoke in the background?

I've always been really stumped... on how this is done.. any ideas anyone? (on the smoke in the background)
is it real or post processed?

Perhaps a fog machine?  That's how it's done in theatrical applications.

That would be my guess too, judging from the shot.
It CAN be done in photoshop though if you can't rent a fog machine. You can find smoke tutorials out there (check YouTube) for smoke that might work but it's hard to beat a fog machine.
Take your camera with you dammit. You can't take your next "best photo" if your camera is sitting at home in the bag, now can you?

I agree, maybe some smoke bombs from the 4th of july and a fan??? But I totally agree fog machine
