camera freezes when I use my flash in M mode
« on: January 08, 2013, 08:30:27 AM »
So I just got my first external flash... a ym560.... and noticed for the first time that when trying to force flash an M mode... my camera freezes. it doesn't do it in live mode... but for whatever reason my camera and the flash will not sync in live mode.  the camera syncs and flashes just fine in auto mode... but obviously I don't want to use any of the auto modes.  is there a firmware update that was supposed to fix this problem? has anybody else had this issue?

So is your problem just in live mode?

Because (hopefully someone will correct me if I'm wrong) non-Canon flashes do not work on the camera in live mode.

Well it doesn't freeze in live mode but obviously the flash won't sync with it... but when I am in normal shooting mode in any of the creative modes.. the camera freezes

When you say your camera freezes, what exactly do you mean? It stops working completely until you remove the battery for a minute? It stops working for 10-15 seconds before finally responding and allowing you to use the buttons again? What settings are you trying to shoot with on the camera? What settings are you using on the flash?

when I say freezes up, I mean that when I try to snap the picture.. the flash fires very weakly.. the screen goes blank, and doesn't respond until I either change modes on the dial, close the pop up flash, or turn it off then back on again.  it doesn't really seem to matter what settings I am using, the first ones I tried were something like 200 iso, 1/100 shutter speed, and f3.5.. I really dont think it has much to do with the flash or the settings though.. it did this in all "creative" modes.. but it doesn't do it in any of the "live" modes, or the auto modes.

I honestly don't have an idea. Try shooting without the LCD on and see what happens.

wow... so I am about to show my noob -ness lol

turns out, when I am NOT in live mode, I have to hit the shutter button twice to actually take the picture... I pretty much ALWAYS use live mode.. so I can digitally zoom to help with focusing.. is there a setting I can change so that I only have to hit the shutter button once?

Menu, Three-Dot wrench/spanner tab, Custom Functions, #8 (Mirror Lockup).

You're not the first person to complain about this, saying "I didn't know that function was there, so there's no way I turned it on". It's been reported:

I recently thought about sending a suggestion to Canon to display mirror lock up on the lcd when this happens. It seems that a lot of people get tricked by this.
I'm an old film guy just playing catchup in this digital world. Help me out.
