Printing from Lightroom
« on: September 21, 2014, 05:00:34 PM »
I don't get it.  When I want to print a 13x19 to the Canon Pro-100 using Lightroom 4, the automatic PPI resolution setting is below 100.  Obviously, I can change it to whatever PPI.  When I want to print a 4x6, the PPI in Lightroom auto setting has it above 240.  Anyone have experience with printing a 13x19 from Lightroom to a Canon printer?  Would love to know what PPI you set in the output to print.

Suka,  I have not printed much at all, I tend to send them off if I need good prints and if I need something quick, I am just 2 miles from Wal-Mart (Understand that I know they are not near the best at anything, just convenient.)

But I have attempted it and have read up on it in Scott Kelby's LR 3 book.  Here is a quote that might lead you to why you get the preset DPI settings with that paper:

Quote
“Note: If printing at 180 ppi freaks you out, just leave it set to the default of 240 ppi, but at least try 180 ppi once on a big print, and see if you can tell a difference.”

Excerpt From: Scott Kelby. “Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 3 Book for Digi..” iBooks. https://itun.es/us/6xt5x.l

I have not tried it yet as my printer will ONLY print up to 8x10, but will one of these days when i get a BIG printer.

So just try it at the default, then try it at 240 and see if you CAN tell any difference.  And then LET US KNOW.

Hope this helps!

I should have read the part above the text in my earlier post.  Here are his numbers with an Epson printer:

Quote
“ I use Epson printers, and I’ve found resolutions that work well for them at various sizes. For example, I use 360 ppi for letter-sized or smaller prints, 240 ppi for 13x19” prints, or just 180 ppi for a 16x20” or larger. (The larger the print size, the lower the resolution you can get away with.)”

Thanks for the info bandmandq.  I always thought 80 ppi for a 13x19 was kind of low, but that has been what Lightroom sets automatically (give or take a few).

My understanding from it is the bigger the print the further away you will  be from it. So it doesn't need to be at 300DPI for a size that print cause you won't be inches from it looking at it. May not be what you want to hear but I think lightroom takes that in to account and adjusts it automatically.
