Canon EF 50 mm f/1.8 II Lens
« on: February 17, 2012, 03:34:52 PM »
Hi,  Am thinking of buying  -Canon EF 50 mm f/1.8 II Lens - what is your opinion?  Have the kit 18-55 lens and the 55-250 lens.

What difference will the 50mm make?  Sorry for asking what may seem like a silly question but am very new to lenses!!!!

Thanks

It is a good piece of glass for the money and should be in every bag.  :)

It is very good for indoor photography where the light is not great (and perhaps flash is not appropriate) because of its wide 1.8 aperture.

It is also good for portraits because it is so sharp.

The 50 1.8 can create some cool depth of field effects and stay very sharp on the subject.

I highly recommend it - it's cheap and it's a great value for quality.

If you did a search for the nifty fifty you would find that we pretty much all call this lens the most bang for the buck that you can get lens wise. It is a very sharp lens that can be opened all the way up to 1.8 to give some bokelishes results as well as be used in low light. I still consider it the most bang for the buck lens wise.

I tried to reply earlier and apparently got logged out...but I echo the other comments.  I just got mine on Tues and have just started the mess around with it.  The low light and brokeh effects are awesome.  I was having issues with the kit lens at my daughters cheer events due to the gym lighting but the "nifty fifty" worked perfect.

This will tell you how much of a newbie I am: I bought this lens a while back (and love it) but didn't know until I read this thread that it was called the "Nifty Fifty".  :o
I had seen that term mentioned in other threads but never made the connection...till now.  ::sigh::
Proofread carefully to make sure you didn't anything out.

Great lens, and beyond worth the money.

The lens is sharp, pretty versatile focal length, great introduction into prime lenses, cheap, FAST, and awesome for video. There are no real downsides to this lens, especially for $100-120.

This lens sucks.  Don't get it.

ok, now that I've ducked all the stuff being thrown at me.  I love this lens.  It was the first lens I bought after getting my t2i and it was based on everyone raving about it on here.  I have several friends who have a t2i as well.  (some I talked into getting it) and they are all begging to borrow the lens to try out.

Just remember, there is nothing fancy or great about this lens other than the photographic quality, especially for the price.

Manual focus is hard because of the way they designed the focus ring, the auto focus is slow and clunky, and it feels like a cheap plastic toy.

Handle it with care and just work around its shortcomings and you can get very nice images...

I do love vintage lenses...

I got my Helios 44-2 (58mm f/2.0) for $6 on e-bay last year. One of my favorite lenses.

Lens has arrived this morning - so I might just have to take an hour or two of work (I am self employed so I can  ;D) and have a play with it.

It would be rude not to!  ;)

My Canon EF 70-200mm F/4.0 L IS USM Lens is arriving today but I cannot take the day off   :( - I will certainly be out at the weekend though (weather permitting!)  :)
