lens question
« on: February 15, 2012, 07:42:09 AM »
Hey guys sorry I know I haven't been on in quite sometime. But I do have a question and maybe someone can help me decide.  Now before I go on I know this is a pretty popular question and I have searched and racked my brains out.  So here it is. In this life of new fatherhood 18 months to be exact.   Lol I see things getting challenging with trying to photograph my daughter running a mock.   When she was 6 and even 8 months I had all day to focus lol she wasn't moving very fast. So now here is my dilemma.   When im out and about with my family I generally use my sigma 18-125mm .. It did its job but as my skills enhance and my daughter gets faster lol I need to upgrade.  Here is what im looking for
my budget is about 600.00 +/- a dollar or two lol
I would need something sharper then the sigma even stopped down its not great
I would like some sort of zoom I was looking at the 18-135 or I think the other was a 17-55 not sure.
It doesn't have to be a canon lens but needs to be EF
Doesn't need to be USM
F4.0 would be plenty fast enough

Now if someone could recommend something that would be awesome. Bc trying to change lens while trying to capture a moment has proved pricey already :-(

I do know that going with something like 18-135 I will be given up some picture quality for zoom but Aslong as its better than the sigma

Thanks
John

John,

Check out this link here on the forum.  Not sure but he might have sold it already.  It might fit your needs and more important, it is L glass so I imagine it will be pretty sharp.

Not to be fussy but I think I might want something on the wider side.
But that's a fine piece of glASS lol

Some lens in addition to the
18-135
And 17-55

Are 17-85, 28-105, and the 28-70 non l glass cousin

Any thoughts on these?  Like I said it doesn't have to be canon glass but from I gather its prolly in my best interest to get canon glass

After I posted, I figured out that I was short on the wide side with that lens.  My kit lens I got with my T21 is the 18-135mm EF-S.  And with a young child, I think you are wise going for that focal length.  I love mine although it doesn't seem to be as sharp as I would like at times.

That's the problem im having with the sigma
I love everything about it size, weight, zoom range, speed at 18mm f3.5
I always shoot at iso 100 and this lens produces some noise and not sure of the technical term but even on a tripod at the mid to long focal range  Edges of objects never seem to be sharp.

Im really contiplation the 18-135 or 28-105.  Id be happy with a 17-85.

Hopefully someone can shed some light on this lol

Thanks for the push Jon!

I dont know if you could find a EF-S 17-55 around $600 could you? I was going to say check out the EF-S 17-85 IS. I would think that could be found for around your price range.

Is the 15-85 a good lens?

It's my favourite lens.
I have not taken it off since I got it last November. I still have the 55-250, nifty fifty and 18-55 kit lens in the bag.
If you use LR3 to correct lens characteristics its superb. Built like L glass but EF-S.
Your initial post said it had to be EF so I didn't respond as I only own the nifty as EF glass.
The 15mm end is great and with the lens correction in LR3 for wide angle distortion its fantastic.

If you want to see some recent pics just give me a shout. I'm afraid I can't show you any comparisons with the kit as I haven't done any.

Its a nice size lens that needs a hood for the wide angle but it is quite heavy compared to the kit or nifty2fifty for that matter.

Actually here are some shots I took last year with that lens

And here are some from a Christening last weekend with that lens https://picasaweb.google.com/114400962434142469330/IslaChristening?authkey=Gv1sRgCNv-zqLUpsXVHw#

Well first thing skier thank you for posting bc I tried sounding smart and meanwhile sounded dumb.   Smh

I always thought ef stood for auto focus or something to do with it.  I guess I should have just stated that lol.

So as a correction I don't care what glass it is or who makes the lens lol I just don't want a lens like my fisheye where it wont autofocus.  Manual focus is good for the fish eye... not good for a kid running around in circles lol....

Getting back on topic that lens seems like just what I need ... is it sharp to your liking ... don't get me wrong everyone liking would be a 5000canon body full sensor with 4000 l glass lol

Its the best overall lens I have.
I think its as sharp between 18-70mm as the niftyfifty, only softening off at the extremes.
I really find the 15mm useful too.
