Need a new printer
« on: January 26, 2012, 02:36:19 PM »
My Epson R300 has lasted about 10 years and now given up the ghost.
I don't do a lot of printing but do print off A4 (thats letter size for you yanks) as well as 4*6 or 5*7 snaps to give to friends.
I also print off the odd letter, map, boarding pass etc but nothing in any volume.

My price is pretty open. I guess I'd spend up to £200 for a reasonable printer with good photo results.
Any and all ideas welcome, although suggestions of using online print companies will not be accepted  :P
I once prayed to God for a camera, but quickly found out he didn't work that way.... so I stole a camera and prayed for his forgiveness.

Might be worth a look at some reviews for this one:

 http://www.amazon.co.uk/Epson-Stylus-P50-Printer-Individual/dp/B002AKJX6U/ref=sr_1_9?ie=UTF8&qid=1327614512&sr=8-9

I used to have a subscription to Which? and their website. For just £1 you can get a trial membership and they are really good for reviews of printers.

I hate printers. I really do. The only one I ever had good luck with, HP decided not to write Windows 7 drivers for... so it became a brick. Everything else I've tried has died within months.

I really don't like printers.  >:(

I've had this one over a year now:

http://www.amazon.com/Canon-PIXMA-Pro9000-Printer-3295B003/dp/B002TPVS8W

I love the thing, but it does go through ink. I'd like to upgrade to the 9500 which adds even more ink. I tried many Epson printers and they kept leaving a large roller mark on the picture no matter what paper or settings I used, Staples had them on sale so I kept returning/exchanging them, went through 4 and all 4 had same issue. I like that I can back feed straight through with the 9000 as well in case I want to print on something thicker or longer like a banner etc. At $288 it's a steal.
One time, this guy handed me a picture of him, he said,"Here's a picture of me when I was younger." Every picture is of you when you were younger. "Here's a picture of me when I'm older." How'd you pull that off? Lemme see that camera... what's it look like? -Mitch Hedberg

I was just looking at that exact printer as it has fantastic reviews on a few websites I've visited and in my photo mag. Shame is that it's £340+ here in the uk! At $288 I'd get it no problems. I really like the idea of A3+ printing too.

I bought it at full price :( $450. It's listed on amazon here in the US anywhere from $288 up to $750, there's a 9500 on there for $1000 which is more than canon direct.

Canon has rebates on it occasionally but I think you have to buy a new camera with it to get them, then it used to be $500 off.

I have a friend that swears by the epsons though.

I too just despise printers - they are just so costly after the purchase.

I now have an older Canon i950. It's worked well for several years, but seems every time I need to use it it needs ink.

I want my old dot-matrix parallel printers back...

I just want something that works... not something that tells me it's out of paper when there's half a rack of 20lb in the feeder...  >:(

The real fun seems to be finding frames for 13x19. I can find them on amazon with mixed reviews, and specialty sites but that's it seemingly.

Now looking at the  Canon 9500.
My desires have got me looking at anything at any price!

I do love the way the adds at the top of the page are all printers now ;)

Well apparently Canon has a 300 rebate on it!

Good til March '12

Edit: Woops, that's a B&H rebate. They have a $200 rebate on the 9000 which brings that down to 199. I'd say it depends on black and white importance right? As far as I know the Matte black ink and the grey ink are the only differences between the two printers.

Edit 2: Nope, the 9500 looks like it uses all pigment inks, the 9000 only uses a few and I don't think they are LUCIA ink.

Its just a shame I'm in the UK otherwise those prices would be fantastic.

Equivalent UK prices are about £350 ($550) for the 9000 and £530 ($830) for the 9500.
So as you can see its a whole different price range!

I'm also looking at the Canon iX6550 here http://www.amazon.co.uk/Canon-PIXMA-iX6550-Colour-Printer/dp/B004N5J9V4/ref=wl_it_dp_o_npd?ie=UTF8&coliid=I3QHYAQNS2NHEV&colid=1RK3WK6IQMWY1
Its not in the same league as the 9000 series but its still A3 and much cheaper. I'm not a pro photographer nor do I sell any of my prints, it really is just to give as presents and frame on my wall.

I bought a Canon SELPHY CP800 Color Dye sublimation printer for printing 4" x 6" prints (all other sizes I use mpix). Prints out great pics and sub dye is great, never run out of ink....

Look into it if all you do is print smaller pics.
Some people are a bunch of Fstops.
