Made this DIY beauty dish form a plastic mixing bowl spray painted white and a shaving mirror glued inside a plastic lid connected with speaker wire

Seems to work pretty good

does the light not heat up to where it smells like something burning? I'm a little leery of this idea. I mean I give you all the credit in the world for trying it but I can't stand even when plastic warms a little and gives of the little odor.

Used it for over 2 hours yesterday without any smell or overheating ( i did feel it a few times) my lights are strobes not continuous lighting so only heat would come from the modeling bulb (which i can turn off)
I didn't mention but at the base where i cut out the hole i did attach quite a bit of polymer clay (Miliput) that sets solid to give it some stability so really only the rim of the plastic is making contact with the strobe.
Maybe you could use a cheap wok pan instead of the plastic bowl but i think the weight would be a problem

Cool.

Good idea and good idea on the polymer clay.

I have said it before and I really mean it. I love me some good solid DIY. Save the money for the lens and things that you can't take care of but when you can make a light stand out of PVC or something like that, do it up.

Good job and thanks for sharing it!
