I need your eyes!!
« on: February 04, 2012, 06:20:39 PM »
Folks,
I'm in need of your help.  I'm hoping that someone on this forum has seen this and can post a link to it.

I ran across a video not long ago that had a guy using a plate (aluminum I think) that had 1/4 by 20 holes around it.  He could then use friction arms to hold accessories and also as handles both over the top and on the sides.  How he used them is irrelevant though.

The key is that he could use the rig as a hand held rig and then quickly, and without any adjustments, connect it to a tripod or monopod, DIY steady cam, or shoulder rig...etc...
The camera could be removed from the plate, thereby removing all the accessories as well.  They stay on the plate.
I believe it was all compatible with a quick connect system (manfroto?)  I'm new to DSLR video, so I'm not sure exactly what I'm talking about.  You may have to fill in some gaps in my descriptions.

When I saw this, I knew I could make one myself at work.  We have 1 inch scrap plates of Aluminum and a machine shop.  I'm good to go,  I just need to see the video again to get measurements and to better actualize the idea.
If, by some reason, I can not find this video.  I'd like some ideas from you, T2i users on how you'd like to see this happen.  Does this idea even seem practical?  How would you like to see it done? ect...  If it works out well, it's possible I could make several available for members of this forum, but that's down the road.  If you have ideas on parts and accessories that you'd like to see on it...please provide links to pics, and or ebay pages etc...

Any help on this would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks,
Nigh

If:
  • You use Firefox
  • You know what site you were on when you viewed it (e.g. youtube)
  • You don't erase your history
You can probably find the video again. Go CTRL-SHIFT-H to bring up your history, then type "youtube" in the search box - this will filter only youtube hits. Then go back in time to try to find the one. You might see it in the title, but what usually happens for me is that if I view a couple of items, I remember what was on my mind that day, and that helps me zero in on roughly where I'm going to find the one I'm looking for.

If you use Internet Explorer, I can't help you.

Yeah, that is the 1st thing I tried, and I couldn't find it. I'm using Chrome mostly.  I'm not sure if it was youtube, vimeo, or another site.  I tend to go off on several "bunny trials" when browsing and God only knows where I've been, or where I'm going.  It's one of those things I initially dismissed but when I saw the 1 inch aluminum plate at work, something "clicked".  Now I'm pulling my hair out trying to find it again. Not that I have much hair.
I'm considering a Manfrotto system for $50, but mounting the bottom upside down on the aluminum (AL) plate.  Then duplicating the top of the Manfrotto system (I think it would be easier) and mounting the manufactured tops upside down on the tripod, steadicam, shoulder rig, etc...
The reason I'm thinking of mounting things upside down is, the easier part to machine is the top part. (the part usually attached to the camera)  That part can be easily manufactured and mounted to multiple rigs.
Now, I'm not nessisarrily going to use Manfrotto parts, I'm just using that as an example so people can get a mental image.

OK, forget all that.  I found it! Thankfully I was logged in to vimeo and I "Favorited" it!  :)

Here's the link:
TUTORIAL: Building a Flexible Top Handle Rig

The part I'm speaking of is the bottom plate.  He goes into detail on the plate at 4:00 with what he has and a less expensive option.  Notice just how OFF I was in my description.  I hope I never witness a crime and have to give a statement.  ;)

Thanks anyway,
