My DIY Stabilizer (work in progress)
« on: November 18, 2011, 04:37:52 PM »
First off, I'm rubbish at making stuff but I'm giving this stabilizer a go as it would be very useful to me if it works, and my non-camera geek friends get bored by this stuff...

Gonna keep this updated as I go and hopefully it might help anyone else trying the same thing. Or it might just give people a laugh when my camera falls off it and smashes.

Slow progress so far, just the gimbal design but this is the part I was most confused about, building the frame should be simple enough if I can find the right parts. The best design seems to be that of WSCLATER at diycamera.com so I have tried to recreate it, only simpler to save on cost and the hassle of getting parts.

I used a Traxxis 7151 for the universal joint and the bearing wheel is from a chain guide on a bike (I'm a bike mechanic so a lot of random bike parts will be used). It's maybe a bit big but should be a decent stable area for the camera mount. The bottom part where the handle will be is the middle bit of a sharpie. It's a totally random bodged design so far but it does all fit together quite well. I'm pretty much making it up as I go on.

This is a project I have been considering for some time now myself.

Where did you get that joint from?  I know you used the bicycle bearing, but I have been trying to find where to buy that gimble joint from

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/7151-TRAXXAS-Driveshaft-assembly-1-16-E-Revo-x1-/380323423665?pt=UK_ToysGames_RadioControlled_JN&hash=item588d0ae5b1

that is where i got the ball joint. im not sure if it will be strong enough though. the joint wsclater used is a traxxas 5151 but they seem to be harder to find.

did a bit more on it yesterday. just needs a bit more bending/filing/screwing/welding and should be ready to start putting weights on and balancing it.

Looking good.

Thanks for the e.bay link.  I might give this a shot myself.  Just not sure what to use for the arched rod
