I posted an audio comparison with and without the latest Magic Lantern (Dec 24th build) and the difference is staggering.

Canon T2i (550D) for Regular Schmoes, Part 16.1 - Magic Lantern Audio Test

Since the ML can be removed by simply formatting the SD card it's definitely something everyone with a T2i should try out.

It works fine on slower cards too, I'm using a Toshiba 16gb Class 4 and a couple of HP 4gb Class 4 cards.

Neil, just curious, you say that you set audio gain at 12.  Is that Analog gain?  If so, what are your left and right digital levels set at?

Updated release for those with the Canon 1.0.9 firmware...

2011Jan04.550d.fw109.audiotrigger+hdr.alex

New features:
* audio trigger from Deti, both for photo and video, works also with self timer
* Better HDR bracketing (a bit faster, can be also triggered by shutter, writes enfuse scripts)

Smaller fixes:
* auto zebra (it turns off while recording)
* cropmarks & black borders
* new default cropmark for Cinemascope
* exposure compensation display
* global draw disables info display
* no more timer issues with lcd remote

Big thanks to Alex for all his work on this!

That was with the digital settings at 12, I hadn't started playing with the analog settings yet.

I also had the microphone mounted backwards on the shoe, pointed right at me.

Sounded great by the way!  I couldn't get over the difference between the two.  Here's my question, do you think the quality would be even better if we turned down the digital gain and increased the analog gain in their place?  I assume this would reduce the amount of "audio noise" but maybe I'm not understanding the whole analog vs digital with respect to ML.

I'm really not sure what the programmer is getting at with both analog and digital settings either, I'm going to be doing some more tests with a variety of microphones and trying out all the settings.
I'm particularly interested in the ones that use the camera's mic for one channel and an external mic on the other.
I've got a mono shotgun mic I want to try out on that setting.

This is really like learning an entirely new camera with the ML installed.

Ryan: If you are testing out the audio on the latest ML (Jan 5), try some voice tests with an external mic and also just the mic on the camera.
I noticed a very slight jitter or hiccup in the audio stream with both this build and the Jan 4 one.

Could just be me, but it was a little weird, hard to describe really, almost as though the processor in the camera was having trouble keeping up with the audio.

May just be me, but I'd like to see if it's turning up for anyone else.

I'd post a sample, but if you run into the situation you won't have to have a reference clip, you'll spot it right away.

I'm running the January 4 version and for both external and internal didn't notice any hiccup or jitter.  I'll update to the Jan 5 version and try again.

 New firmware build...

2011Jan06.550d.fw109.hdrfix+movielog.alex.zip

Quote
- fixes HDR issue with skipped frames (tested by Stefano)
- for each movie, it creates a log file with lens metadata, like on5D2 (issue 234)
- LCD RemoteShot has two options: near and away (feature request from our Chinese user)

Log files are named after the movie (e.g. MOV_1234.LOG) and are placed in DCIM (similar to enfuse scripts). Maybe it's better to place them in DCIM/1xxCANON?

Alex cranks out updates faster than I can test them!  ;D

I'm going to try out the latest version with a microphone and also use an off-camera recorder to capture sound simultaneously.

That should put my "jitter" to rest once and for all! It's either there or it's just me.

Audio monitoring on the latest version!  I'm going ballistic!!!

Here's a build with the first feature for strobists: camera takes a picture with flash, next one without flash... and so on. To use it, enable Shoot->Flash Toggle from ML menu.

This is something I've been missing from the old Fuji 6500 (Natural Light with Flash mode).

Also, this build has audio monitoring enabled, and auto movie restart after 4 GB limit.

For any one who films live events with their T2i, you HAVE to get this upgraded firmware. Here is some footage from an event I filmed last Wed. Super loud packed event. From 00:01-01:00 and 15:20-21:22 the audio you hear was only captured by my T2i:

Oh my this stuff is wicked awesome. I just need a book of ML for dummies and I will be all set.

Here is my dumb ass question of the day. 1 Download to a mem card and then boot camera from that card. 2 Shoot movie clips to the same card??? Or do you boot camera and then change cards to capture video???
I'm an old film guy just playing catchup in this digital world. Help me out.
