Magic Lantern - Is Now The Right Time To Install?
« on: September 21, 2011, 09:31:04 AM »
Like most things, I sit and debate with myself for a good week or two before jumping on board with new things. Whether it's new lenses, accessories or in this case, firmware.

Now I know ML is a great addition to the Canon cameras and I am not here to argue that point, I am just here to try and get some better insight on whether it has it's place on my camera.

As of right now, I rarely shoot video but would love to continue to learn and grow when it comes to videography with my T2i.

My arsenal is small and consists of a 50mm 1.8, EF 70-210mm and the basic 18-55mm kit lens. So the real question is, since I do mostly photography at this point in time, should I go ahead and install ML? I really want to do it, but at the same time, I just can't figure out whether or not I should.

install ML. You'll find it easier to start with shooting using this software.

You say easier to start shooting..do you mean photos or videos?  Is there any reason to get the firmware for photography?

Built in intervalometer, customizable HDR (bracketing) shooting, bulb mode are just a few things that come to mind for photography-related uses.

That was my main question being that I rarely shoot video at this point in time. I guess I'll install it this weekend and see how it goes.

Just discovered a nice trick: night vision (you can see in almost complete darkness). Now I'm testing it with a pinhole :)

This translates to ISO 409600 in video mode (yes, 6 digits) and ISO 819200 in photo mode, but only for framing. I think it will be helpful for night shots or for strong ND filters.

The auto-shoot based on sound, is a very interesting option for me. Is there anyway to set a dB threshold level, or have there been thoughts of adding that into the firmware?

You can do the conversion yourself: value_dB = 20 log10(level), where level is what you set in ML menu.

So, level=3 is 10 dB, level=10 is 20 dB and level=30 is 30dB (roughly).
