What software are you using to edit video? Are you converting your files before you edit?

Alright. Sony Vegas Pro is all about the processor. Period. 4GB of RAM should be fine, unless you're running Photoshop or any other Adobe products.

For video editing with Vegas Pro, I wouldn't recommend anything slower than the fastest i7 processor you can afford... So with a 2009 Dell, odds are you'll need a new computer. Your motherboard may or may not be compatible with the new procs, as well as any other updates you'd need to make them run happy.

So, what kind of budget do you have? I can make a recommendation or two if you want. I've been using Sony Vegas Pro for a couple of years, on semi-custom i7 system and it's very nice...

Follow Ctwo's advice.  I tried the $500-$800 computer route and it just didn't work for smooth editing of Canon DSLR files.  With a first generation Core i7 processor I still had to transcode, current machine is an HP with a 2nd gen Core i7 (quad core) 2600 and that does it.  I wish I had even spent a bit more and gone for a 2nd gen Core i7 six core processor.  The guys who have those say they literally FLY!

Your 2009 vintage dual core mother board is not compatible with Core i7 (or even i5) technology.  You're due for a "new box".
