I, for one, am sticking with LR3.6 for the time being.

I've struggled along with LR4 through RC-2 but I just can't take it.

LR3 is light greased lightning compared to 4....

Until they work this out...I'm sticking with LR-3...oh well.
rpavich - are you running 32 or 64 bit windows? I am just wondering if that might be the problem is all.

I'm running 64 bit.

If you check the Adobe boards there are all KINDS of people having the same lag issues that have MUCH bigger machines than mine...

LR3 is a joy compared to my experience with LR4

That sucks since I just ordered it the other day. I am going to download it and see if it is a problem for me before I open the package.

Maybe I am more tolerant of the lag.  I never really used 3.x much as I started on the 4 beta and then used a trial until they gave me my free upgrade.

Lightroom is basically a very large database, and it always takes a long time to propagate the data in the very beginning. Is Lightroom maxing out the cpu with background apps making the computer lag?

fyi - I'm working on Adobe Elements organizer, and had to switch off most automatic scans (face recognition, and smart tags, etc ..) to keep to app from maxing out the cpu. (figure adobe has similar setup with lightroom)

Mine pegs the CPU a LOT.

Something that LR3 never does.

Each time a preview has to change it takes 15 seconds and much of the time it does a "not responding" message.

EVERYTHING in LR3 is faster...importing, emailing, uploading, changing views, choosing a new image, clicking any of the buttons, ANYTHING is faster in LR3 by a long shot.

From what I can figure, Lightroom is able to be non destructive by storing the list of modifications in a database. It also stores a preview image with all of the mods added to it in the database. To zoom in to 100%, or adding a change to an image, Lightroom has to render the change to the image before storing the info in the database again. This takes time and CPU power.

If Lightroom is setup to automatically run through the entire database this will take up a lot of CPU time. Once the database is setup (letting the program run overnight - or longer), or disable the auto scans , the program should run smoother. My thought is that Lightroom 3 has had the chance to setup its database already.

Perhaps I just got a sharper copy, but I have not noticed any significant lag or CPU problems  ;)  Even if there was a slight reduction in performance over LR3 I would be happy to put up with it because of the improved functionality and the price... just sayin...
I used to be a very negative person... but then I went digital.

I have now had LR 4 on my computer, 32bit, for about 8 hours. I just keep playing to see if I notice anything and I am just going to say that so far all I notice is that I like LR4 better. Not because it is running faster, (seems the same for me), but because of the new controls. I think they made some small but nice improvements.

That would sound like it would be the issue but its' not the case.

LR4 was slow from the start....I loaded all 1:1 previews ahead of time to try and help and it didn't.

I created a new DB to help and it didn't.

For example on LR3 I just uninstalled LR4 two days ago and installed LR3. within 5 minutes it was running like greased lightning...I can't get it to be sluggish no matter what I do.

Contrast that with LR4...it was horrible in the Beta, the RC-1 was slightly better and RC-2 didn't change that.

These are known issues...Adobe is aware of this stuff....it will just take time to work out the bugs and for now...I can't afford to wait an eternity for each mouse click.

rpavich - you said it started out that way right from the install right? So far I have reviewed, made adjustments, and exported while just trying to simulate my normal process and I can not detect any issues. Now I know you are reading Adobe boards and others are having the same trouble. Has anyone come up with any common factor to what the problem could be?

I was afraid that my 32 bit windows would be an issue but so far it is not at all.

Not that I know of but I can say this: An Adobe employee just (a few minutes ago) said that they were aware of the issues that everyone is posting about and are working on fixing them.

Good enough for me...

Okay, I did not want to have to take back anything so I waited before I posted this but I am going to tell you that I am having zero problems running LR4. Now I am running it on the upgraded computer that I just rebuilt.

I went to an Intel I5 that is running at 3.30GHz. I also reloaded Windows and installed the right version and now have 64bit running on 16GB of memory. I wish I understood my system info a little better because I am wondering how it is telling me that I have 31.9 GB of Virtual Memory? Anyway, here are somethings that I have noticed.

I open the program like a snap of the fingers. Never ever was I able to open LR like that.
I export things super quick compared to what it was.
I export to the plugin manager and open up Photomatix almost instantly.
My right click and "edit in" options are super quick.

I have one time since I had this loaded had my results from moving my sliders lagging. I used to get that in LR3 after processing maybe 15 photos. I noticed it once with LR4 and it was after some major work.
