Shutter Actuations - What to do after the shutter died ?
« on: February 15, 2012, 12:33:10 PM »
I have my t2i less than a month ago and already have about 2000 shutter actuations. Now I realy got shocked when I realised that it has a limited life time and now I'm not taking pictures as loosely as before. If it lasts 100000 actuations then it means I already used "2% of my camera life" so far ?  ??? :-[
What is suposed to be done after the shutter failing ? I supose it is covered by warranty, or if I'm not covered by warranty by that time I'm I paying for fixing it or what ? I was considering using magic lantern firmware but now i'm afraid I'll realy need waranty.

Please give me advice and enlight about this.

Thanks

I think you've probably been reading the sites that post amount of actuations before the camera dies.
Statistically these sites will be posted to by people whose cameras have died and not by those who are still happily using theirs after 10+ years.

I personally don't worry about this sort of thing. I'm on 20,000 or so actuations after just one year. Does this mean my camera will simply stop working after 5 years? I don't think so.
I once prayed to God for a camera, but quickly found out he didn't work that way.... so I stole a camera and prayed for his forgiveness.

Mine is somewhere around 34000. The reason it is so high is that I have passed my camera off to my daughter for the most part and she is snap happy. She takes tons and tons of shots and loves to play with them in post. She is 15 and she is doing part of the yearbook thing for her school so she is in heaven.
I'm an old film guy just playing catchup in this digital world. Help me out.

But if it ever fails, is this covered by warranty ? I've seen people talking about like 300$ for a new shutter but I guess it should be covered by warranty right ?

It's covered when the camera is under warranty - I think standard warranty is 1 year and some retailers offer extended warranties for a total of 2, 3, and 5 years.

The most likely scenario is that you will never wear out the shutter, a high percentage of consumers will never shoot that much before the technology is replaced. If you shoot 100 per day, it would take nearly 3 years to reach 100k. If you shoot 100 per week, you are looking at nearly 20 years.

I'm on my 3rd digital camera and each upgrade has been an upgrade in both technology and features/performance. I've not come close to wearing out any of my cameras - although the T2i is on track to hit 10k per year...

I've worried about this a bit when thinking of getting into time-lapse. But I've just decide not to worry. If I'm not snapping pictures whenever the lighting/opportunity arises then whats the point? I'm at around 16,000 after 8 months. If I do the timelapse thing- that should get up to about 10-20,000 every month minimum. Price of admission I guess!
