Before anyone starts suggesting, tell us more about what you want and need. That will give us a much better idea of what to recommend.

Yeah, that would help, wouldn't it?  LOL
Well, show off my work, sell my work, offer services.  Basic "hey I'm a photographer and this is what I do kind of stuff"
I'm fine at designing and working the software to create the site.  I don't need a bazillion email addresses.  Statistics would be nice to know.
So a hosting service.  I know there are other companies that can handle all the business side of things.  Like say someone wants to buy a print.  They take care of taking the order, printing and shipping.

So you would be building your own site and using somewhere like smugmug to sell your work through the site?

At least for now, I don't think you need a ton of bandwidth.

The place I use for my hosting would be much more than you would ever need (I get 750,000 views a year while constantly uploading new images and having new content daily), so I would wait to see if anyone else can chime in as what I use and pay could probably be done cheaper elsewhere since you don't need all of the bells and whistles that I have with my service. I would suggest just going out and checking a google search and checking out some reviews for different hosting services.

I have 3 sites that have been or are currently hosted by Go Daddy.  I am very pleased with them.  Cost is reasonable and there down time is almost non existant.

I cannot tell you how much I pay for those packages, as someone else pays for them and I build the sites.  One site, I have linked photos from SmugMug to the site and it all works great.

A photographer friend hosts his page on MobileMe and sells them through SmugMug.  Now MobleMe will go away in June 2012 so am not sure where he will move his site.

I would have to recommend GoDaddy.

GoDaddy are crap. I have a website that I was having trouble with in 2008 with a different hosting company, so I registered it with serviceuptime.com. We showed them the evidence that the hosting was unacceptable (98.9%) and told them to fix it, but they were unable to. So we switched, some time during 2009 to GoDaddy because it was simple and the domain was registered there. 2010 was great, with only nine failed checks during the entire year. However, things started to go bad again in 2011, and despite repeated complaints, they have not improved. The statistics for February are awful, barely over 99% again. And it ALWAYS takes a long time to load, even on a good day. They're now almost as bad as the previous hosting company was.

I own a zen cart store where I sell whimsy and prim clipart of specific artsts, and in the 2.5 years I've had it up and running, it's never crashed. I use Host Gator and love them.  I think I have unlimited everything. I'm fairly busy too. It's a side job of mine.

I only use my Canon Rebel Digital T2i. I have a 18-55 and  55-250 kit, 50mm 1.8 lens, DHD 0.45 x super wide angle lens with macro, a macro close up set, a Fotodiox Macro extension tube set kit and UV, Circular, and florescent lens.

While I don't use host gator, I have heard nothing but good things from people who do.

I have several of my photos up on fineartamerica.com.  It's a print-on-demand service, which may not be what you're looking for.  For free, you can list 25 images with POD.  For $30/yr, it's unlimited, and they give you a unique URL.  Here's mine: http://eric-reuter.artistwebsites.com/  There are also a lot of marketing tools - Facebook and Twitter integration (posts when you put up a new image, etc.), Google integration, etc.

I've only been adding photos for a couple weeks, and haven't sold anything, but it easy as pie to get up and running.

Wow! Nice pictures! I have like 5 or more stores at Cafepress.com which is POD, and I just started telling myself, after going to your link "I'm not going to do POD with pictures when I get good....I'm not going to do POD with pictures when I get good....I'm not going to do POD with pictures when I get good...."....I have a tendency to bite off more then I can chew.  ::)

Thanks.  All taken with the T2i, of course!

I totally understand the aversion to POD.  I also have some stuff on Etsy, which, if I ever sold anything, would require mailing a print.  There is obviously the advantage of having control over the printing process, etc.  However, both FAA and Society6 use the embedded ColorSync profile for printing, and the product quality is highly reviewed.

I have a show coming up this summer at a local cafe.  My first.  I'm torn about whether to leave those images up on the POD sites.  It makes it hard to charge what I'd like to charge in the show when someone could just go and buy a print.  When you set your prices on the POD sites, you have to keep them low to be competitive (unless you're already famous or something), but at a show you have a captive audience and no competition.  Anyway, I have to time to think about it.

And I'm veering way off topic.

Hmmmmm, is there a way to hide the images you will be selling offline a few days before the show and then when the show is over, you can unhide them (sorry, can't think of a better word the "Unhide" today, I know it's probably not a word lol, sinuses are hurting and my brain is apparently not functioning well lol)?

When you look at an image at your POD stoer, does it show what date you uploaded the images, anywhere?

I ask, because if it doesn't, you might be able to say "I added those after the show" or something (unless of course they are arranged in order of when they were uploaded).

If anyone says something, you could say the prices at the POD are specials you run maybe? It is hard when you have to compete online and have your prices lower then offline.

If I think of anything else, I will let you know. Lord knows ya want to make money when offline!
Just throwing things out there.  :)

Good points.  It does show the date posted, and if anyone comments on it, that will be dated.  I'm really THAT worried about it.  It's (by far) more about sharing my work than making money.  I don't really care if I ever sell anything.

There's a convenience factor when you walk away from a show with a framed print that you don't get online.  Plus, it will be signed.  Both add value, I think.
