How to turn shutter sound off?
« on: January 22, 2012, 01:53:18 PM »
Im not sure if there's a way to turn shutter sound off or not because it's preventing me from takin pictures at quiet places.  I don't mind the noise anywhere else but just sometimes I don't people staring at the girl who's going off with her camera. For ex, at an awards assembly when the speaker was talking and I snapped away or at a baptismal when priest is talking.  I don't just take one, I take many and to others, it's annoying and for me, kinda embarrassing.

You can't. The shutter sound is actually there. Unlike in point and shoot/camera phones, where it is automated to sound like a real camera.

Hmm, that's not good.  Guess that means I can't bring my new cam to "quiet" places. Thanks!

If you had a 5DmkII, I would suggest this blimp: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/756100-REG/Aqua_Tech_1041_1041_Sound_Blimp_for.html

But there exists no such product for the T2i/T3i product line. Gotta upgrade first.

I'm pretty sure with magic lantern there is a silent mode where it just using the rolling shutter to take a picture. not positive though

The "rolling shutter" isn't something that can take a picture, and  ML cannot quiet the sound of a physical shutter actuating.

We have finally found something ML cannot do!
It would be pretty amazing if a piece of software could actually change the way the hardware worked thus stopping the shutter actuation sound.
I once prayed to God for a camera, but quickly found out he didn't work that way.... so I stole a camera and prayed for his forgiveness.

There is, but it's limited to 2 megapixels; that's because it's basically using the movie mode, and in a HD movie, each frame is 2 megapixels.

You could sort of fake this by simply taking a movie and choosing the frame you liked  ;D actually, I'm not sure this is such a bad idea... the resolution would be poor, but you'd have plenty of shots to pick the perfect one... LOL

Frame grabs from video don't count!  ::) lol

It's still not using the "rolling shutter" to take a picture, though, unless you really want everything skewed 20 degrees.  :o

It's that was 'silent shot' is on ML?  I know it goes into LiveMode or whatever so there's an initial shutter sound of it opening but after that, you half press and it takes pictures.  Or is that what was mentioned above?

Go to http://magiclantern.wikia.com/wiki/Unified/Vote_for_Features and scroll down to "Not Possible" and "Silent Shutter" and click on 'read more'. It says
Quote
Currently possible at low resolution (up to 2 megapixels).

Higher resolution requires a great deal of reverse engineering.

As it happens, HD movie is also 2 Megapixels (1920 x 1080), and is achieved with an electronic shutter, so I'm doing a leap of inference here, and assuming that it's the HD movie capability that ML is making use of.

Yep, same complaint on this camera.  It's a great camera but that shutter is loud.  Maybe because of the plastic shell??
