Fill Flash!!
« on: May 26, 2012, 07:58:10 AM »
I never understood the TRUE importance of fill flash until I pulled this up in Photoshop.  Both photos are untouched and one was taken right after the other:

Bingo!

That's (in my opinion) a large dividing line between amateurs and those who are more "intermediate" as photogs...realizing that things need to be lit and then getting 'er done.

Yeah - this is one reason I am so happy that my flash (the YN-648II) and wireless triggers have finally been delivered. Had the flash for a few days but the triggers only came today So will finally be able to try out some off-camera flashing filling :)

Here's the full shot.  It was such a gorgeous morning!  I got lucky since the weather has been really crappy lately:

I know almost nothing about flash. I am not a flash user except for one thing. Fill Flash. That is it. You got it. Now I love this photo as I am strangely attracted to pregnant women.

I do wonder if the shot could be a tiny bit better, and really I am only speaking tiny, if you would have had her do the jaw line trick of pushing her head outward a little. I don't think on this person it would make much difference but since seeing that video I am consumed with the jawline.

Good job Chelie!

Very nice!

I'm assuming that on the non-flash shot, your flash had not fully recharged, and so you got a shot without?

I have been in situations like that, and sometimes, it's really nice to see the flash version and the non-flash version to compare just like yours above.

In one situation, I realized that NOT using the flash was better.  I was shooting a jazz club with really sh*tty lighting.  My flash batteries started to die, and I forgot my replacements.

I really couldn't tell any advantage to not using flash with the LCD.  But when I got home, I started processing.  I was happily surprised to see that non-flash photos were better in that situation!  My ISO's were skyrocketing, but I took them into Black and White, and the grainy qualities looked fine.

Jaw line trick?

Yeah it wasn't done recharging yet.  I get a bit trigger happy and my poor flash just can't keep up. Lol.
