Photoshop editing.
« on: February 22, 2012, 01:37:52 PM »
I am tweaking a few of my photos in ps elements 10, nothing too drastic just playing with the colours and levels to make them stand out a bit.
When i save them the file size almost doubles!
I am pretty new to photoshop so im sure there is a simple explanation to this but i just dont understand it!

You must be saving it as a PSE file? What was your original - JPEG or RAW?

You may want to use 'Save as' and choose  JPEG if the size bothers you...

Sometimes I find it really difficult to concentr......  ooooooh! a butterfly!!!!

Hey Snapper
The original file is JPG and I'm saving it as a JPG so I don't know why it would be bigger? Hmm..

Yep, saving at highest quality results in a larger file. PSE must use a different compression...

I use Photoshop and I don't know if its the same or not, but whenever I edit a JPEG in Ps, I usually end up with a larger file than when I started.  Normally I save the file twice (depending on size).  That way I have a full res for printing if needed and a lower res for the web.

This is normal.  When you make changes to the original image you are adding data so the file size increases.  One of the things you can do is to save at a lower quality than the full 12.  I often save at 11 or even 10 and I still get good prints.  Images that I want printed I send to MPIX.com, if ordering larger prints like 11x14 or 16x20 I think they run the file through some kind of upscaling conversion algorythm  similar to what Genuine Fractals used to do.  Then they route it to their printing gear.  I get large prints that look identical in sharpness, detail, and tonal quality to what I used to get from 6x7cm Vericolor Professional film in my studio days.

JPEG is a lossy format, each time you save it you loose something, even with 100% quality. Save in a non lossy format which will be bigger but will retain all the data.

Copying a JPEG from one location to another (i.e. camera to PC) is OK. I make a golden rule to save as a PSD (I'm using Photoshop CS3) and only save as a JPEG if the image is being used on the web.

Ok I have got to the bottom of this issue.
I was adjusting the levels in the photo which was creating another layer and in turn doubling the size of the file.

It's a cool way to tweak your photos and learn about histograms at the same time.
