Swinging children
« on: April 18, 2012, 06:08:04 AM »
Hey guys!! Long time no chat eh? :D

So this past weekend, I was photographing some kids and their parents stuck them in some swings.  No biggie right? Pfft.  Pretty much every shot had just a tad bit of blurry in it and it made me a sad panda.  Some came out, but the really cute ones were garbage.  I was shooting in Av mode with my 50mm.  For something like this, should I switch to M or maybe Tv?  Any tips would be great!  ;D

Av is no good for action, it generally doesn't get the shutter speed high enough.

I'd recommend Tv over Manual, simply because it's harder to keep up with everything while you're tracking kids!

Bada Boom!

I agree with 1074. It is way more important to get the shutter up there with the swingers then it is to control the aperture. What sort of shutter speeds were you getting?

BTW - I searched and searched but could not find the sort of shot that I love with kids swinging so here is an idea that I love. It is a little hard as you have to pan and use slightly slower shutters but if you can pull it off I think they make great shots.

Agreed - TV with a high shutterspeed will be best.

But also - I would recommend back-button focus in servo mode.

Awesome, thanks everyone!!!  I have to investigate this back button focusing!
