The Olympic torch!
« on: May 28, 2012, 09:26:54 AM »
The Olympic torch is coming through Chester tomorrow and since I am now conveniently out of work I am hoping to fight my way through the crowds of patriotic Brits to get some good photos :)

Here's hoping the forecast showers stay away....

Showers will probably be a good thing. It will likely keep some people home and it will saturate any colors for you. Don't let showers hold you back.

God no - definitely won't let a little thing like rain stop me :)

That is true though, the promise of rain often keeps the crowds down....

Well that turned into a disappointing nothing...

My wife had the car for work and so I was going to walk into town for it.... Thought I would do some gardening in the morning and twisted my bloody ankle.... So much for that!

Haha - yes I am. I'm off to Amsterdam on Friday and don't want my ankle to be an issue while walking all over the city :)

My right ankle has been weak ever since it was a bit smashed up in an accident when I was a teenager, so whenever this happens (as it does every now and then) I know I need to give it a couple of days before I do much on it otherwise I'll be out for quite a bit longer....

It is a royal pain in the arse because I was damn well looking forward to it!

I think the Amsterdam shots you are going to post up for us will more than make up for the lack of Olympic torch pics ;)

Did you get any tickets for the Olympics by the way?
I once prayed to God for a camera, but quickly found out he didn't work that way.... so I stole a camera and prayed for his forgiveness.

No - but it didn't concern me too much - at the time that everything was happening I didn't have a job and there was no guarantee that I would get one so couldn't exactly justify the potential expense - especially as we had just sunk a lot of money moving over here.... Would have love to though...

Did you?

I got tickets to the mens mountain biking (which I wanted as I am a mountain biker)
And my farther got tickets for the athletics one evening so we are off to that. I think its the 1500m final and 800m semis. I would have preferred to the 100m or 200m personally but he prefers the longer track distances. It will be an experience, I can't wait. Not sure what camera equipment we are allowed to take in though??

Cool - mountain biking is always a cool event and would be great to go to!

With regards to camera size, I found this online:
A book out this year called Capture the Moment, a guide to taking photos at London 2012, states: "You are allowed to take camera phones, compact cameras and DSLRs into Olympic and Paralympic venues, as long as the equipment fits into a bag no bigger than 30 x 20 x 20cm. Anything above this may be confiscated and not necessarily returned to you."

Your camera bag must fit under your seat, and tripods, or big lenses, are a definite no-no as they could obscure other people's view,

Hah - and that post took me up to 300 and 'Sr Member' :P

Thanks for posting that and congrats on the 300th post!

I was thinking of hiring the Canon 100-400mm L lens again and it would easily fit in a bag half that size so am now not sure whether its allowed or not. "No big lenses but you can take a bag in 20*20*30??" talk about confusing us just a tad.

I will keep an eye out closer to the time and check again before having a hired lens confiscated on me!

Yeah - closer to the time they will have to release official guidelines for this sort of thing, instead of just supposed guideline quite a while out....

And yeah - having a rented lens confiscated and not returned would not be cool....
