So yes I went on a long time Doodle to say that I agree with you in principal but I strongly encourage anyone that ever sees themselves shooting more than snapshots to learn the merits of shooting in RAW.

I agree 100%.  My post was basically for the very new people to our type of cameras and new to photography in general.
I kind of consider using raw and then post editing as the next step after getting past using the PHD mode. I think once a person gets comfortable with learning the Photography Triangle (S.S., ISO and Aperture), then they are probably more than ready to take their shooting to the next level by getting serious about PP work.
I think the OP is well beyond that stage but I just wanted to throw in a blurb for the newer folks yet.  :)
Take your camera with you dammit. You can't take your next "best photo" if your camera is sitting at home in the bag, now can you?

I agree, as I myself have always used JPEG and have yet to shoot in RAW.  However, at the time, I knew nothing of the other types of files.
That being said, I wish I had.  There are so many photos I've taken that I wish I had more room to play with.  To go back and change the WB on.
So in that regard, I'm actually torn here.  In a way, I do agree with Doodle.  But I also don't.

I have very little experience with the whole thing but I always shoot RAW + jpg - that way I always get the best of both worlds... If there is a great shot (or potential to be made into a great shot) in there I have the RAW to play with, but for a lot of my more simple photos I have the jpgs...

Definitely don't have enough time to manually play with every photo I take :)

*ahem*

Just received a g.o.r.g.e.o.u.s 20x30 canvas print.  The file I sent to the printer was a JPEG.

...Just sayin'.

I can believe that but just tell me this. Was it shot as a Jpeg? I have printed out a good amount of 16x24 JPEG's but that was before I learned that I could print the Tiff's. I was always happy but they was all one time converts from RAW to JPEG with the idea that I was printing.
I'm an old film guy just playing catchup in this digital world. Help me out.

Of course it was shot in RAW.  Someone might misconstrue this thread as saying JPEG < everything else.  I always recommend RAW shooting, but there is nothing wrong in saving in JPEG.  Now, if you are going to continue editing something, that's a different story.  HOWEVER, I have redited JPEGS multiple times before and never really had a loss in quality that I noticed, and I like to print stuff pretty big...  I think this has to boil down to personal preference honestly.  Not trying to knock anyone's opinion...this is just my 2 cents. :)
