Which lens should I get for my B-day?
« on: February 03, 2012, 10:24:02 AM »
My B-day is not so far from this date so I'm currently searching for what my new lens will be.

I currently have:

50mm f/1.8
18-135mm IS f/3.5-5.6
Rokinon 8mm f/3.5

I love both the nifty fifty and the Rokinon 8mm. They are so cheap and have great image quality that
I'm definitely not getting rid of these two lenses. The one I'm not so in love with is the 18-135mm.
I might sell it to get some money for the new lens. I want a step-up in both image quality and aperture.
Now, you are probably asking this question...
What do you need the new lens for? What type of photography? Well, i want a good zoom
all-around-lens with a fast aperture, or a normal prime lens with a fast aperture. So let's say,
whichever one I get must be a fast lens. I find myself not using the 75-135mm focal length. So I
think a wide to short telephoto lens would be enough. I have my eye set up on:

Sigma 30mm f/1.4
Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 (Non-VC)

Just those two. I want some other options. Let's see if you guys can recommend me any other ones.
Also, I'm one of those budget/performance type of guys. So, if you have had any experience with these
two lenses, please speak up. Don't want to break the bank guys. $600ish at the most. Thanks in advance!

All I can really offer is that I have seen and did some great shots with the Tamron 17-50mm that you are talking about. My problem is that I know that not every single one of them is a top notch performer. I tested one that was great. I bought and returned one that was very soft.

So I guess I am saying that I very much liked the one that I used that was sharp. I think if you get that lens then you win. I know nothing about the Sigma beyond what I have read in this forum.
I'm an old film guy just playing catchup in this digital world. Help me out.

I just bought & returned that Tamron last month. Soft copy...

If you've got the patience to try multiple copies until you find a good one. It's not a bad choice, but between the two I'd be picking the Sigma.
I'm awesome on the Internet!

I use the Sigma 30mm as my walkaround lens, I freaking love it.  Especially because if you just happen to pop indoors, you're still good to go.  Or course then you'll wind up in the same boat as me where the next lens you want is something with some telephoto action...
I quit my job, bought an RV and am traveling North America, capturing it with my t2i
