short video record time - only seconds
« on: December 21, 2011, 08:07:44 PM »
I have had my camera for a couple months mainly only taken pics so far but recorded a few clips. but notice now when I try to record it only records for less that 10 seconds and then stops and says MOVIE RECORDING HAS BEEN STOPPED AUTOMATICALLY . I have a 10 class 16gb card and the card is about 1/2 free . not sure why its not letting me record longer clips anymore . any info is helpful

thanks

Your "Class 10" card isn't performing to the level it should be...

Several threads have addressed this lately... What kind of card are you using, and where did you buy it?

For some unknown reason, Canon DSLR's don't always work well with Lexar (and Kingston) cards... Canon has openly acknowledged this, even.

SanDisk makes the most reliable cards for use with the T2i (and the rest of the Canon line), I would recommend switching over to Class 6 or 10 SanDisks.

... what 1074 says. One thing to try, however: I don't go with these folks who recommend formatting the card in the camera every time you use it, but if we accept that there's something odd about Lexar/Kingston cards that the Canon doesn't like, formatting might mitigate it (whatever it is). Can you try copying off all your data and then reformatting in the camera and trying again? Also, can you confirm that you see the buffer icon prior to auto-stop?

I have a Lexar 8Gb Class#10 micro SDHC that works fine.

I have the same problem using a Promaster 16 gb class 10.  I presumed it was a good card as I had to trade all of my old Pentax 35 mm gear to get it,  ok they gave me $65 and I got took by a pro shop.  Anyone else use Promaster cards?

Just did some quick research.  One source has it that Promaster media is rebranded Delkin (not one of the better brands anyway).  Some users of Delkin UDMA cards seem to get about twice the speed of Promaster media so it looks like the Promaster is the lower end Delkin product.

Another speculates Promaster is rebranded Delkin and rebranded Hoya.  I doubt this seriously as Hoya filters are top quality and I don't see them putting out a lower grade product for companies like Promaster.  I am always suspicious of "house" brands and anything rebranded.

Your best bet is SanDisk and that purchased from a reputable dealer like B&H in NYC (they set the "Gold Standard" for integrity in dealing with customers) to avoid counterfeit.  SanDisk is the most counterfeited media on the market (especially on ebay) so that should tell you something.

Right now B&H has some of the lowest prices on SanDisk I've seen.  $29.95 for 16GB SanDisk Extreme Class (10), $59.95 for 32GB.

If you can't take that Promaster card back for a refund, I'd trash it so I'd never be tempted to try it for video again.

I had the same issue right out of the box using a cheap card that was packaged with my camera bundle.  i bounced around some stores to find a quick , inexpensive solution, to test this out further and found some inexpensive class 10 cards in an "officemax" store.   I bought a Verbatim 4G for $9 (discounted item) and a 16G Kodak for under $20.  If you can't wait for an online order, you can always give this a shot.  This clearly addressed my issue and am now able to record just fine.  Good luck!
